The
Roman-Catholic Church of St.Francis from
Assisi is in the
Slovak village of German origin (Heerwarte). It is eldest maintained
and it is
the one of most valuable wooden churches in Slovakia.It has got a
two-part
ground plan, a high tower with shingle roof what give it the pure
Gothic
character. Tradition of making shingles is still maintained in this
village. Church
is made from red spruce. Difference between this church and the other
wooden
churches is that, the hervartov still maintain stone floor. The
building
consists of a polygonal sanctuary, nave, vestry and undertower, which
was
renovated to include an entry hall. Interior of this church was changed
many
times. Most changes were made during the reformation. In 18th century
was added
the part of baroque decor. The individual parts of main gothic altar of
st.
Dorothy, st. Catherine of Alexandria and st. Barbara were installed
separately
after reconstruction in 1985 – 1890 when was altar returned to
it´s original
form. This church was added to the national heritage (UNESCO) list in
2008.
